The settings
Detect language from location
On a visitor's first visit, the storefront looks up their country from their connection and switches to that country's language, if it is one of your enabled languages. From then on it treats that language as the visitor's own choice.
Detect currency from location
The storefront shows prices in the currency of the visitor's country, if it is one of your enabled currencies.
A language or currency the visitor picks themselves in the language and currency picker takes priority over detection and over your defaults, for as long as you keep it enabled.
Default language
The language the storefront opens in when detection is off, or finds no language you enabled. It is also the language a link to a disabled language opens in.
Default currency
The currency prices are shown in when detection is off, or finds no currency you enabled.
Both lists show only what you enabled on Platform Languages and Platform Currencies.
Until you save this screen, both switches are on, and the defaults are the language and currency your platform was set up with.

How a visitor's language and currency are chosen
The same order applies to the language and to the currency, each on its own switch.
Changing what you offer
Your defaults must always be among the languages and currencies you offer, so the order of work matters:
| To | Do |
|---|---|
| Make a new language or currency the default | Enable it on Platform Languages or Platform Currencies, then choose it here |
| Switch off the current default | Choose another default here, then switch the old one off |
Questions
Why is a language or currency missing from the dropdown? It is not enabled. Enable it first.
A visitor abroad saw the wrong language. Detection only picks a language you enabled. If their country's language is not one of them, they get your default language.
Does detection apply to a visitor who follows a link to a page in a specific language? Yes, on their first visit, as long as they have not picked a language yet. Once they have one, detection leaves them alone.
I switched detection off. Why do returning visitors still see another currency? They picked it themselves. Their own choice stays for as long as you offer that currency.
